Keep your eye open for little bubbles breaking open on the surface that release little puffs of smoke then you know you found them.
Seriously though what I've found is that they want a really sloooow presentation with a pretty big bait. I've been using 6-7 inch senko's and blind casting them and deadsticking them for a bit. Or a brush hogs fished the same way.

Re: So where did they go???

For finding fish pre and post spawn, fish lead in lead out banks for those who do not know what these are they are path ways along the entrances to coves that fish follow both in and out of the spawning grounds.Such as the first drop or a roadbed that leaves it then goes slowly deeper.Fish migrate on those paths just as deer or buffalo do on the plains or in the woods, stopping to rest every so often and dropping over the side a tad deeper, then continue their journey. After achieving acclimation to temp and depth they then tend to follow their food source.
Those routes are very good to use semi shallow crank baits on,bandit 200,rc3 etc.
And that pattern takes both pre and post spawn fish they seldom all spawn at the same time its spread out with a stray one or two being very late and the same early,so its more like a two month period not a 3 week one.
Females in more southern locales often spawn more than once and about 1 month apart, with the bulk of their eggs on the first one.
So their travel doesnt go far from the beds, merely a lead in lead out bank say 1/4 mile away at most then back making their stay in or on the tournpike rather extensive.

Love to but cant wife isnt healthy cant leave her alone.oxygen etc, chf, diabetic, and 5 dogs and 2 cats.
But come on over south east, will show you what a lead in lead out bank is.Or send me a map ill mark yours for your area,or even give me a lake name.
Basically just like deer make a path following contour so do fish, they are the highways in and out of spawning areas, that eventually they go over the side at and go deeper after spawning, that to can also be predicted to some extent, say a long point that goes way out, from one of those paths.
Everything that is done prior is done later and more than one time a year.
Spring in and out generally once if north twice or more in southern lat,fla and tex having quite multiple spawns. The the fall in and out, same points then eventually leading along those same routes to the backs of the bays following their food source.
Right now late spawn or post the most important feature of that route would be their deep water escape, example a roadbed going say 1/4 mile near along the entrance 3-6 ft deep then going out to a point that goes from 3 ft to 16ft in depth all while keeping its point features.
Guys will launch go directly to a point like that fish it then go to another, never ever understanding why those produce so well.
Its not just a 2 way street but a junction more like I 64.
