I AM NOT SAYING THERE SHOULD BE CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR STUPIDITY,
BUT, WHY DON'T WE JUST TAKE THE SAFETY LABELS OFF OF EVERYTHING
AND LET THE PROBLEM SOLVE ITSELF?"

Re: Imagine

That photo reminded me of an experience I had...

Back in 1968 I had a 18' Rekin tri-hull w/100hp evinrude(saltwater bow rider). That particular engine had a electronic solenoid shifter located in the lower unit.

Wellll... I was at the head of the shipping channel coming into Galveston Bay when one of the wires decided it was time to corrode into. And... one of them big mutha's was heading straight at me - and they ain't grounding those things by getting out of the channel. But...

A guy in about a 28' Sports fisherman saw my plight and motored over and asked: "Do you need some help?" Welll Yeaaaaahhhh - I do. So I threw him a tow line and took a double wrap around a deck cleat on the bow of my boat. He laid the coals to that sports fisherman and "KER-POW!"..... Snatched that deck cleat right outta the top cap. Ok... .so next time I tied it off to the bow eye... That cargo ship was tootin' it's horn for all it was worth and as history will reveal we were able to get out of harms way with little time to spare.

Re: Imagine

'Taint nothin'. I played a round of chicken with 1 up on Erie one day and he blinked...

Had a 16' Astroglass that I got caught out in a storm and the lake kicked up. Sheltered in a cove out at an island until the worst blew thru. Getting late in the day and really didn't want to overnight there.

Started working our way back thru 4-5 swells that were toppin. Had the hyd jp socked down and motor trimmed up, quarterin' into the waves, working our way back to the ramp.

Saw this ship coming in to port from the main lake and it was obvious our paths would intersect but figured we'd get thru first without an issue. 'Course I wasn't thinkin' 'bout the speed he was making versus my plowing along at up to 3000 rpms, keeping the bow high and timing the waves.

After some time and watching that ship I concluded we were going to be closer to intersectiing than I figured. I start pushing it some more 'cause the waves were bad enough in that shallow draft 16 footer...I sure didn't want to deal with his WAKE!

Anyhoo, we beat 'im but at a point that I didn't have eyeshot of the pilot house, so of course he couldn't see me either. Musta been hows come that sucker starts blowin' his horn kinda persistent like (ya think?). He ended up turning to my stern and I could hear the engines kinda doing some various pitched gruntin'. I figure the captain wasn't too friggin happy. emoticon emoticon emoticon

The whole time my buddy was kinda wide-eyed 'bout the whole deal but at least it occupied his time and he fergot 'bout throwin' up over the side for awhile. emoticon

Back in 68 had same experience only with a new 4 man rubber raft I had bought just off lakeshore drive chicago, after dark and with a 12 pt lantern, darn freighter looked huge in that lantern light, and no never ventured again out there kept it in more quiet waters, like the fox river out near Aurora Il.
