I've been using marinetex. good stuff but sands like a rock. Ya need to get it close to the shape ya want unless you really like sanding.
Haven't had complaints or failures yet.
Don't use an automotive type filler below the water line. They absorb water and will fail after a while.

Maybe a stupid question but why would there be "putty" on your nosecone to begin with?

I don't know if they actually weld'em all way 'round (don't need to so far as strength goes) but you wouldn't want to have to "finish" the weld fine enough to blend the cone into the LU housing AND to be paint-ready. The putty is an acceptable "cheater" to prepare it for finishing, so long as you get proper adhesion!

Not so in this case. emoticon

Re: Lower unit repair (nose Cone)

the cone edge where it meets the bullet needs to be feathered out so it doesn't cause turbulence as water passes by it. any imperfect edge on a hi perf motor can cause blowout crabbing and a bunch of handling problems. maybe not on a ranger or nitro tho emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon that should bubble up nitros' blood emoticon emoticon j/k gize had a fun day today
