I AM NOT SAYING THERE SHOULD BE CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR STUPIDITY,
BUT, WHY DON'T WE JUST TAKE THE SAFETY LABELS OFF OF EVERYTHING
AND LET THE PROBLEM SOLVE ITSELF?"

Re: Red necks come up with oil spill solution

I saw this on the news the other day. I have a few problems with it and I am by no means an expert. They use engine oil which has different properties than crude oil. How does it work on crude? How much hay will it take to cover the spill? If you don't pick up all the hay, the oil is still in the water. If all the hay goes into the gulf, what will they feed the cows? A local tv station tested the same thing with a material that looked like spray insulation. It worked good in an aquarium with engine oil, but how will it work with crude? Like I said, I am by no means an expert. I'm retired and have time to think about stuff. This spill is close to hame and will mess up things for years to come.

I'd agree that crude is different, but it's also the same. Simple answer is, they keep showing us pictures of the crude on the marsh grass and what-not. Difference between marsh grass and hay? Just sayin'. emoticon

It's pretty hard to say how much hay it would take since they have a pretty hard time saying how much oil is out there.

Yeah, hay not picked up is oil (attached) in the water. The difference between that and now?

The cows ain't gonna go hungry. Hay is a multiple-harvest-point crop - Up north you'll get 4-5 harvests a season and I would expect it's quite a few more down south. Plus, like they pointed out, straw will also be available in a few weeks. That is, the leftover stem of grain crops like wheat, oats, etc. It's not a food source although it is used for animal bedding, mostly. The rest goes back on the field and returns some stored nutrients and tilth (think of it as fiber) to the soil.

The whole deal in the end with this idea is, they ain't gonna do it. Reason? It ain't fancy enough - no wizbang, scientific, spray plane, lazer gun, high-faluting egghead solution that some campaign fund contributing pencil neck is selling.

The ones that they need to "sell" the idea to is Jindle. He seems to be a gitrdone sorta guy that's willing to grab the bull and say to hell with the feds and their whineyazz permit-headed-take-5-years-to-decide ways of doing things.

Like I said, I'm no expert. I would like them to try everything that has been proposed. That way we will know for sure.

It would be much better than doing nothing however, the hay will sink after a while although I don't know if it would with the oil attached. Combine this with the booms they are using and it may have stayed off the beach.
I'm in New Orleans at Jefferson Parrish and it's reported to be here on the beach now. Nothing has been done by the Feds to protect the beach here.....

Front page of the Houma Courier shows oil in Lake Felicity, inland from the barrier islands. Can be seen at www.houmatoday.com

Well, it doesn't surprise me if a redneck came up with it. I've often said if they want to find Bin Laden, just send a few rednecks over there and furnish them all their beer and bullets, and they'll fine him. The hay would work just fine, but they can't leave it in the water to float to the bank. But they've already tried to set fire to this crap, so why can't they use the hay, then set it on fire. The oil soaked hay will float for days, and the fire would then burn everything out. The hay and the oil. Now it's going to make a hell of a smoke cloud, but I would take the cloud over the disaster any day. Just my opinion.

Its been used prior on smaller spills and its an absorbant as dried out, greem marsh grass wont absorb.hay however will. But think of the amount needed.
