What Year???

When did OMC change the rating of there outboards....I dont know when they went from propshaft hp rating to powerhead rating???...I finally found a 140 that has lead a good life and is still in stock form and the best thing is the price is unbeiliveable....400 for it lock stock and barrell. Compression is 92 to 96 across all 4 cylinders. If its a true 140 then I have to get ahold of my buddy and find out if he still wants my 90hp. I finally may have beaten Murphy's Law for once.

In fact even if its not 140 at the prop it still has all the making's for one.....bubble back exhaust, ithas the 1 3/8ths carbs, etc etc....

If my buddy doesnt want or cant get my 90 right now I will have to try and sell it. So if you know of anyone that wants a good 1994 90hp Evinrude....no controlls or prop that has been well maintained for $400 let me know. I could get more for the motor but all I want to do is get enough to get this 140.

84 is rated at power head .... 85 on is rated at prop shaft..... a good shape stock 84 140 on the dyno puts out 132hp yea i know i thought it would be lower but aparently back then they were librel with the hp ratings that falls at the max 10 percent they have to rate by. a 85 140 puts out 152hp this is just on two omc v4s that i ran across and actualy had dyno papers as u know every motor will differ but the were rated pretty low realy surprised me on the power head rated 140 actualy puts that much out at the propshaft hey i like under rated engines.

Thats what I was thinking Wevel....that around the mid 80's is when they did the change from power to prop shaft rating but couldnt remeber. Ole Darth VMAX on the other site has more info than ole man Evinrude hisself but I dont know how in the hell to get ahold of him and steer him over here.

Re: What Year???

Yeah 85 is when most but not all were rated at the powerhead.Smaller hp motors actually were first, and the 135 and 140 motors are my favorite.
I had a johnson 135 that required mid grade oct,stock,with a 2/1 gr it ran 59 mph with a 23 p mazco2 1/2 under the pad,as stock gc.
Toying with the idea of a 140 as a replacement on the alley,as lighter motor old school, and cheap comparitively to buy a rebuilt one is 5900 with a one year warr.
