Wevel one thing that you need to check buddy is the date when they made the map........alot of times you get old ones that arnt detailed and the newer ones with the technology they have nowadays are more detailed......Just something that I have noticed.

Re: maps

I think the challenge you'll find with what you want to do is, if a hump doesn't achieve the depth of the next higher contour line - it's not going to show....at least not as an small isolated one.

For instance, you may locate a wide and elongated ridge line at 40 foot and the contour lines are at 10 foot intervals, the fact that it rises in a lopsided point towards one end and to the side, to 34 foot...since it didn't rise up to the 30 foot mark - it won't show up.

Some maps will have spot soundings marked on them by certain makers but often only on certain waters. My HotSpots maps for Lake Erie are pretty good that way, at least to the extend they're marked. This may be largely because there are extensive areas where contour variation only amounts to 1-2 feet. On a regular topo map, it would look largely like a warped frying pan on the bottom......not actually flat, but not notably "un-flat" either.

In a way, I would figure that your "problem" could be considered an advantage. If you could readily pick up a map that shows all the little "out of the way" features, they wouldn't be "less pressured". emoticon

I would get a good map and mark/number it where your unpublished features are, then document them with descriptions and coordinates. Just keep adding to it. Make sure to make copies of your documentation so you can never lose it whether or not you lose the map, a notebook, hard drive, disk, cd, etc. I have maps with marks and notes scribbled on, waypoints saved in 2 different plotters, and those waypoints saved to files on 2 computers.

Good luck with your task! emoticon

Re: maps

After reading Nightmare's reply I agree with him 100% and it also reminded me why I love...I MEAN REALLY LOVE a boat that has like a Lowrance 1240 indash flasher.....

When I am in my buddys Nitro I always keep a marker buoy ready and when running on newer water especially during the summer months I keep a watchful eye on the flasher....If I am in say 30ft of wtare and all of a sudden get flashes at say 15ft...out goes the buoy till I can turn around and check it out more closely with the LCD......I never could learn to read the flashers like the OLD pro's could but they are REAL TIME sonar and will show a conout or hump mucjh more quickly than a LCD will when running.........just a little useful FYI.
