2002 225 Pro X

A guy in my district has a Stroker with a 225 Pro X. Earlier this year he hit something that bent the prop shaft(among other things). He had the lower unit rebuilt and the first time back out on the lake it was horribly slow out of the hole, had no power and topped out at around 6,000rpms. He took it back to the shop and they "said" they put it on the computer and the engine is dead. I don't have any information on a compression test results - if they took one. But... From my experience working on small engines I'm wondering if it's simply a sheared flywheel key and the timing is off. That's what it sounds like to me but I've never heard of a Merc. shearing a flywheel key. Has anyone ever seen that happen? How the heck could the diagnostic tool/computer determine the engine is not worth repairing - as this guy was told?

NO KEY there is a flat now on the DS spline that the flywheel can only go on one way
Been that way for a long time now. It is possible that the CS end has started to shear and twist off. I had one not to long ago the shaft was spun almost 5 deg and one that just sheared completely but that was easy to spot the flywheel wasn't spinning anymore. One of the drawbacks of the solid prop hubs instead of the plastic torque flo's

Yeah... he had also busted the solid hub. Did you know those hubs are actually two pieces welded together. Word I heard is they've(mercury) experienced a number of failures with those hubs. Unlike the flo-torque hubs these do not fit a taper and the entire thrust from the engine is carried at the point they welded the two pieces of the hub together. Looks like a very... very poor design from where I'm sitting.

Mine has been working fine for 3 years now. The problem comes in when ya hit rocks. So don't do that. I looked at my 2 closely and dont see any welds. Its true there is no thrust washer but the heel part is tapered.

When you slide the ss hub on the prop shaft.... Ain't no taper. All the thrust pressure is on the end of the hub that contacts the prop shaft shoulder where the nut threads on!!! If that small area cracks, and that's what's been happening, then the hub/prop can slide all the way down to the prop shaft seal area. You can run it that way but... now the thrust is pushing against the 3/16" or so that was machined off where the prop shaft seals install.

There is an easy solution run OMC,then have an entire different set of problems.
One of which is sitting there waiting for all those black things to catch up.
Regardless of motor mfg some models have glitches. Before id straigten out that one id buy a replacement copy lower made in fla for about 750 bucks.

Re: 2002 225 Pro X

yes on some boats it will, depends upon the boat somewhat, some run better with mercs some with rudes, just as some will run 1.75 gears and some 1.71 or 2.1.
Yes again to an ho running against an opti or an xs,the only xs I think that would do much better than the ho version is the 200.
The biggest advantage merc has is gear ratio and with an l2 gearcase not much advantage as available in 1.71.
As for my lil 3L engine yes,as its bigger than its counterparts of the same year of mfg,and still weighs less 415lbs as have a 15 in lower,428 with a 20 in. my boat 1000 lbs me 130 lbs and a 408 pd motor, against any 1400 lb to 1700 lb monster with a 250 xs on it will eat crow
With a slightly different powerhead (JEV)and a heavier driver it did 107 mph in the 1/4.
That said if that black mota was on an allison id have my work cut out,but he would know he was in a race, and possibly lose.
Theres a 225 ported mariner nearby on a 2002 I can run with him, dunno which of us is actually faster as never asked to have a run out.I tend to run out of driver before I do boat.
SO what if im an omc with an attitude got the stuff to back it up.Just havnt got the driver for much over 90.
And if anyone wants to race np we both fill up with 87 oct and have at it.
Just about any mota that runs on low oct it will outrun, and if ya gotta shave heads to get that hp whats the point, anyone can.
Wasnt attempting to hyjack the thread,if its damaged that much why not just replace it less expense id think as the copy is but 750.

Be carefull what you wish for, your describing ,march and or nov here, and that lil 20 ft does ok in it.
Hardest part is just having to have the stuff down deep inside to get up and go in it.
Worse when you come back later they are taller.Allison sure did his homework, not just on speed but stability, it can take a 7 ft broadside and not swamp or capsize.
I like my OMC motors they have done well by me,and like the lil alley although may trade up for an xtb eventually for more storage.
We all tend to run what we like or can afford, and despite what color motas you guys run your still ok.
Ive got a 20 year old boat and a 16 year old motor and feel fortunate.
It will also pass a lot of the stuff a lot newer, regardless of color,or boat.
