Re: SBG can you relate?
YES!!! I can relate! Unfortunatly, I'm not going to say all but most "drivers/operators" can do their job and thats IT. No common sense in most. They are supposed to (by law!) do their DOT walk around or daily inspections every morning and then again to finish the sheet out in the afternoon when they get back. Do you think they do it? Heck no they fire it off and take and never look back.
A couple of years ago we had a pickup engine lock up because it had no oil in it. The driver and his boss said that it was our fault. It wasn't "our" truck, was a pickup for the linecrew. How could it be our fault. They said that we (as in the garage) are supposed to keep oil in it??? WTF???? Its the drivers responsiblity for checking these things not the mechanic shop.
We have got linemen and helpers now driving these trucks. NOT DRIVERS. They keep tearing stuff up, you right it up as an accident and nothing ever gets done about it.
So to answer your question yes I can relate and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. This is a very sore subject for me I guess I'm just getting tired of pulling wrenches for a living. Maybe someday they'll be another opening somewhere else in the company. I had thought about going to the line crew at one point. But I don't think that would have been a good idea. Its not the heights that bother me its the people involved.

Re: SBG can you relate?
The older I get the more I gotta believe people are just plain stupid. Got a call last week after that really bad storm we had that a server system was down. She's all wacked out an screaming to send a tech over right away THEN she says bring a flashlight too cause the power is out. Can she really be that stupid.

Re: SBG can you relate?
Nitey, how many cars do you have parked at the office at one time? Are they parked in the same place every time? What I mean is , is the designated parking for you cruisers? How close is it to power. Can you put battery maintainers on the cars and plug them up?
Another question. When you are sitting and watching traffic or at the doughnut shop or what ever you do when away from the office do you turn you cars off ever? The reason I ask is if you don't need curtain stuff when your not in the car then why in the heck did the service techs hook straight to power? Why not to the ignition? When you turn the car off it goes off and comes back on when you start it.
They also make devises that when the battery gets down to a curtain voltage it will shut down what ever you have running through it.
Bottom line is that it sounds like the guys in your depart ment aren't any different than the guys that are in the company I work for.

Re: SBG can you relate?
Or you can do like we do with the inverters on the line trucks. They leave them on over the weekend and wonder why their batteries are dead as a hammer Monday mornin??? Put a relay inline with whatever they are leaving on so that when they cut the ignition switch off it automatically cuts off what they don't. It sucks but just about everything that you have to manually turn off or on you have to make it idiot proof.

Re: SBG can you relate?
Much like limiting the mileage per shift to save gas, if you're sitting still - they want the car shut off. That includes whether it's in the 90s or 20s. So between no miles to drive and no idle time, there's little charge time.
A few pieces of equipment can be turned off when away from the car, but most of it has to be immediate-use available. Too much of this electronic crap has a boot-up lag time that can make ya crazy when you jump in and need it NOW. Some equipment has a calibration check process every time it's powered up. If you're in the car, it's all on.
Other simple things like rechargeable flashlights take time to charge back up but leaving 'em in the charge sleeve when the car ain't running, might make the difference between start/no-start when you get in later. Most of it's charge gets done at home.
No, we don't have outside power access at the new facility. But at least we got water faucets every 100' . We have some cars that are currently parked (not in use) but otherwise we take our assigned cars home. That way charging their batteries up gets paid for on our electric bill.
We have a single wheeled charger that low rate is 60 amp but vehicle needs to go inside a garage bay which is secure and climate control area. So, you pull the car around - go in thru walk in door - open overhead - drive in - close overhead....then reverse process to include hot runs. No auto/remote door openers, can't leave doors open, have to hold the button to run the door either direction for security. It all takes time that some of the guys just don't take.
I've suggested those charge capacitor units for on the batteries, but that would cost $.
Yup, some of the same kinds a people.
