Be safe when boating, wear a pfd

Beat the odds- choose the right PFD and wear it.
If you think most drownings occur way out at sea, you wrong.
Fact is, 9 out of 10 drowning occur in inland waters, most within a few feet of safety. Most of victims owned pfd's but died without them.
(they useless unless you wear it)

When you don't wear your PFD, the odds are against you. Your taking a chance on your life.

Staying on top- Most adults only need an extra 12 pounds of buoyancy to keep their heads above water. But a pfd is a personal flotation device and it's important to get the right one for you. Your weight is not the only factor to consider when buying an pfd. Body fat, lung size, clothing, and whether the water is calm or rough, all play a part in staying on top. Read the labels on your pfd's to be sure you got the right one. Also test it, then in an emergency, don't panic. Relax, put your head back and let your pfd help you come out on top.
(if you wearing it chances are you not gonna panic)

trying your new pfd- try it to see if it fits well and is comfortable, then go into shallow water and test it, if you have children have then do the same so they get comfortable with the "how to use it", and what to do in case of emergency. PFD's are designed not to ride up on the body when in the water. Well... if you have a big stomach, ride up may occur. However it is still effective.
(wear it and your chances increase dramatically)

Teach your children- Please teach them well. Children panic when they fall into the water suddenly. They start to move their arms and legs violently, making it hard to float safely in a pfd. it may keep them afloat but not necessarily face up. That's why testing is important, so they get familiar with it. To test if the fit is right, pick up your child by the shoulders of the pfd. If pfd fits right, the child's chin and ears will not slip through. PFD's are not babysitters, even knowing they have a pfd an adult should always be with them and never leave them alone. all those inflatable toys and rafts should not be use in place of an pfd. Even knowing that type III pfd (flotation aid) is more comfortable children in the 30-50 pound range should always wear type II pfd (near shore buoyancy)
(wear it, and make others wear it as well.)

good advice.
almost every time you read about a boat fatality its either no pfd or alcohol or both

I AM NOT SAYING THERE SHOULD BE CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR STUPIDITY,
BUT, WHY DON'T WE JUST TAKE THE SAFETY LABELS OFF OF EVERYTHING
AND LET THE PROBLEM SOLVE ITSELF?"
