Re: Lower unit repair (nose Cone)
I've been using marinetex. good stuff but sands like a rock. Ya need to get it close to the shape ya want unless you really like sanding.
Haven't had complaints or failures yet.
Don't use an automotive type filler below the water line. They absorb water and will fail after a while.

Re: Lower unit repair (nose Cone)
Maybe a stupid question but why would there be "putty" on your nosecone to begin with?

I AM NOT SAYING THERE SHOULD BE CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR STUPIDITY,
BUT, WHY DON'T WE JUST TAKE THE SAFETY LABELS OFF OF EVERYTHING
AND LET THE PROBLEM SOLVE ITSELF?"

I don't know if they actually weld'em all way 'round (don't need to so far as strength goes) but you wouldn't want to have to "finish" the weld fine enough to blend the cone into the LU housing AND to be paint-ready. The putty is an acceptable "cheater" to prepare it for finishing, so long as you get proper adhesion!
Not so in this case.
