Re: Charlie,What is this?????
Not really sure why ya would want to remove it on a steel bore motor. I do know that the nikasil motors like the 245, 260 280 don't use thermostats they have a restricting washer in its place because they dont have the temp vs expansion problems that steel bore motors have. Maybe those are the folks that remove the valve.

Re: Charlie,What is this?????
nope mule all steel bore motors will expand and contract at diff rates than the aluminum pistons with heat coming from the combustion and the cold water coming in to cool it they tend to expand and contract unless the flow is controled accordingly. This is the case on ALL 2 stroke motors. Ever hear of cold sieze. thats when ya fish in winter up here in the north in 35 degree water with a hot motor and in comes that ice cold water and bam the walls contract and "sieze" the motor. Thats why the required warm up in the newer motors. Lets that stat do its job. Lets the walls and pistons and rings all get to the same expansion rates before ya put the peddle down.
