fuel problem

alright her folks heres what i got carbed 140 rude running duel inline elec fuel pumps ... about a week ago the problem would show itself maybe one time.. the boat would suddnly lose power i would back of throtel then it would run fine.... now its got bad it will run fine for 5 minutes or so then itl fall off plane completly and only idle around.....( THE only time im running it is for test runs i aint blowin it again ) i swaped fuel pumps added a fuel pressure guage in the splash well so i could monitore fuel pressure when running...... ok so heres the results the first minute 39 seconds it would scream holding at 6 psi with only one fuel pump running then i started lossing power i look back my pres guage is at 0 i let of throtel cut other pump on im back at 6 psi (normaly with both pumps im at 15+ psi there not meant to run together but can i have two for emergincy pourposes) when i get back on throtel it takes about 5 seconds and im at 0 psi with both pumps running .... so im amsuming theres a fuel restriction and its not in the carbs... all hoses are new none are tigtly bent .. so i pulled the fuel pick up out of the tank my dosent have a sock ts got a internial screen i can blow through it without a whole lot of resistanse i give it a few wacks and holy crap all kind of crap came flying out ill post pics later.... so my question is by my thinking this is proly what caused this surging the tube is losly packed with debree when i start.. then the more i run the more the debre because of the vacum is getting closer packed causing my problem ... does this sound right any thing else to check .. thanks for any insight

Re: fuel problem

well sounds like you can blame it on the ethenhol . what year is your fuel tank
I know there were problems with pre 96 or something tanks that were disolving and breaking down due to the ethenhol additive.
you may have that crap all the way to the first filter too.

Doesn't take much filter restriction to cause a problem, been there.

Rather than having to pull the pickup on a regular basis, since you have that new 'n improved spin-on filter/seperator with a tremendous amount of filter area, I'd remove the screen and just change the spin-on on an annual schedule. (always keep a new filter on hand, though....sealed up and in the boat)

as of right now im still using the pickup screen if i have any more problems i will remove it curently im running a pickup screen a prefilter screen filter water sep. filtor screen that are made into electric pumps then a filter before each carb i removed the plastic fuel manifold and made one out of brass (i dont trust plastic... all the fuell system is brass aluminum or ss and the alky rated fuel hoses..... itl be this weekend before i get to test it th e problem keep getting worse and worse then the last trips it would only run good for a minute or two maximum at least i know its fuel related since the fuel guage is droping to 0 psi when it does this. heres a pic of what came out of tube this isnt half of it i was just slinging crap everywere then i decided to put it on a paper plate and take a pic...

That looks alot like the sludge that I've been getting out of the diesel fuel filters here at work. Sometimes it looks like the filled up with muddy swamp water. Been having lots of trouble with the fuel here too. But its been diesel and not so much gas, but I don't hardly ever see gas burners much.

Maybe time to re-think where you fill up. Somebody appears to have a buncha crap in their tank and garbage for a filter system.

It would be interesting to have the stuff analyzed to know exactly what it is. Then a guy would definitely be able to knowlegably approach the problem with a proper correction. Otherwise, you can only educated guess at it.

you haven't pizz'd anybody off lately have ya. Coulda been put in the tank by a not so happy with you bud. We had a tx last year where a few guys all of a sudden started running like crap out of the blue. Turned out someone was going around with sugar and thinning out the competition.
